A pilot for Gravity Falls was pitched to Disney Channel in 2010 which led to the series being green-lit.[2][3] The series premiered on Disney Channel on June 15, 2012. On March 12, 2013, the show was renewed for a second season.[4] However, Disney did not officially confirm the second season until July 29, 2013.[5] The second season premiered on August 1, 2014, on Disney Channel, and on August 4, 2014, on Disney XD. On November 20, 2015, Alex Hirsch stated that the second season of the show would be the last, and would conclude with the final part of the three-part finale entitled \"Weirdmageddon\".[6] The episode aired on February 15, 2016.[7]
The short series, Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained, Mabel's Guide to Life, Fixin' It with Soos, TV Shorts and Mabel's Scrapbook, aired between the first and second season of Gravity Falls.
Gideon plays a prominent role in the season finale, \"Gideon Rises.\" He reveals the purpose of the journals, and tells his father (and the viewing audience) that he still requires the other one, Journal 1. Upon stealing Journal 3 from Dipper, however, he discovers that there are 3 journals, and he pursues the Pines twins (who were forced to leave town around this time) in a giant robot under the assumption that Dipper kept the first one for himself. He catches them, attempting to reclaim Mabel as his bride, and almost succeeds. He is stopped at the last moment by Dipper, however, and the robot crashes after a brief skirmish in the control center.
Alex Hirsch has provided conflicting information regarding the number of episodes in the first season. On August 8, 2012, he said there would be 21 episodes.[47] However, on July 7, 2013, he implied there are only 20 episodes as \"Dreamscaperers\" is the 19th episode.[1] On July 8, 2013, he confirmed his original statement of 21 episodes was incorrect.[48]
Toward the end of the season, when asked if there was anything he regretted or would have changed about season 1, Alex Hirsch answered in the affirmative; saying he would have included more mystery episodes, had less Wendy/Dipper episodes and spaced them out a lot more.[49]
The first season is available on iTunes on two volumes in SD/HD. Episodes were released within a week of the episode's premiere on Disney Channel. The exception being \"Boyz Crazy\" which was accidentally released under the title for \"Carpet Diem\" days before it actually aired. The same mix-up was included in \"Disney Channel Freaky Freakend\" compilation package, both mistakes were later fixed. \"Summerween\" was also released in \"Disney Channel Monstober, Vol. 2,\" and later the short, \"Candy Monster\" was released under \"Monstober, Vol. 3.\" Vol. 1 of Gravity Falls consists of the first 10 episodes,[50] and vol 2. consists of the last 10 episodes.[51] The first episode, \"Tourist Trapped\" was available for free download on iTunes, for a brief period of time during the show's initial premiere, and in January 2013 was chosen for Starbucks \"Pick of the Week.\"[52] The episodes are also available on Youtube and Amazon, and volume 2 is available on Google Play.
Season Two had a lot riding on it since the first season introduced many questions and had fans hooked on the mystery behind Gravity Falls. In my opinion, Gravity Falls Season Two went above and beyond all expectations, and has quickly became one of my favorite television shows. It is a huge improvement from the first season, which is a huge accomplishment seeing how enjoyable the first season was.
In \"Juricksic Mort\", the dinosaurs close up the interdimensional rift of the Central Finite Curve that Rick had been leaving open. When they do this, Rick mentions that the rift could have been used to be milked for a whole season, or \"like, a three-episode arc, at least\" referring to Weirdmageddon.
