9 The Proton RFP provided a brief description of the automated crack and flaw characterization operation. The Operator stated that this function is most required in the following areas:
During commissioning of new pipeline.
During commissioning and quality assurance of new pipeline.
During the operation of new pipeline.
During the operation of pipeline in which the cracks/flaws have changed.
10 The Proton RFP stated that the operator wants a crack/flaw characterization tool which is able to interactively measure the crack/flaw size and location. The Operator also wants a crack/flaw characterization tool which does not affect the pipeline and surrounding pipe. The Operator is interested in a crack/flaw characterization tool which can be used with the minimum amount of operator intervention, and which does not require the Operator to be in a particular position during crack analysis. The Operator feels that all methods for crack characterization are acceptable as long as the data is accurate and consistent. The Operator is interested in a tool which is capable of characterizing internal cracks in both vertical and horizontal cracks and which is capable of characterizing the crack formation in both vertical and horizontal cracks, with a non-contact technology.
The Target Operator has expressed a need for a tool capable of characterizing internal crack formation with high tolerance. This includes a tool capable of characterizing the crack formation in both vertical and horizontal cracks, with a non-contact technology. The operator also is interested in a tool which can be operated with the minimum amount of interaction from the operator. This includes a tool capable of characterizing cracks in the absence of a defined crack pattern and a tool which does not require the tool operator to be in a particular position during crack analysis.
11 The Operator expects that the optimization of the automated crack/flaw characterization tool will be performed during the development of the proposed technology. The Operator also expects that the automated crack/flaw characterization tool will be tested during the demonstration of the prototype.
The tool is integrated into the main volume and has 5 different depth reading modes for all different crack types. The depth tool can be used for all types of welds and can be used in manual and automated modes.
The tool has good performance in terms of speed and accuracy of the depth readings. However this is a relatively newer tool and only a few users have used it. The depth readings are recorded in the profile of the crack and are read in the main volume just before the next profile is being taken so as to avoid losing any data.
The MATLAB environment is based on the MathWorks MATLAB® Compiler, or MMC, which is a proprietary language developed by MathWorks to facilitate the building of applications. MMC understands the MATLAB language and various task APIs and provides efficient intermediate language compilers for compiling functions and scripts. 827ec27edc
