When people tell me that my song-writing style seems like it could have come from the '60s, '70s, or early '80s, I take that as a compliment. Back in the day, people paid more attention to the poetics of the love song. Today [in songs] there is usually more sexual element than a romantic one. The best way to express an emotion like love is through storytelling. It makes it more 'I can relate to this character in this song, because I've been through something similar.' You hear that kind of storytelling in the song that I wrote for Rihanna called 'Hate That I Love You'.[4]
Critics compared "Hate That I Love You" to previous works by Ne-Yo.[12] Nick Levine from Digital Spy called the song a "second cousin" of Ne-Yo's singles "Sexy Love" and "Because of You".[11] Regarding the lyrics, Rihanna said, "When you're in love with someone, even though they keep hurting you, you're so naive and you love them so much that you put all the negative behind even though you keep getting hurt."[13]
The video's opening scene shows the sun rising and Rihanna waking up. Meanwhile, Ne-Yo walks along a street, wearing a hat that obscures most of his face. Rihanna is in her room; she is bored and wondering which clothes to wear, and she finds a gold necklace. As the song starts, Rihanna lies in bed and sings, while Ne-Yo continues walking along the street, approaches the hotel and cautiously looks around before entering it. Meanwhile, Rihanna dresses,[39] leaves the room and walks through the hallway of the hotel. Ne-Yo goes in an elevator to the floor of Rihanna's room. As Rihanna waits near the elevator, it opens. Ne-Yo and Rihanna meet and smile at each other as Rihanna enters the elevator and Ne-Yo exits. It is then revealed that Rihanna and Ne-Yo are not singing about each other, but different people. As the video progresses, Rihanna is downstairs, chanting the lyrics of the song and Ne-Yo is in a hallway. He knocks on a door, which his girlfriend opens, and he enters the room. Rihanna simultaneously climbs into her lover's car and they smile at each other. The video ends with the previous scenes showing Rihanna leaving her hotel room. A reviewer from MTV UK commented, "After Shut Up And Drive the 19 year old is going even raunchier for this vid- writhing around on a bed in her underwear and pearls."[42]
Still not totally ready to get over your ex, even though you know that you probably should? Don't worry. Rihanna gets it. Listen to this song and reflect on how much you hate that you love you them so.
Still feeling lonely after your breakup? Yeah, you have your friends and family. But maybe you're still craving that romantic kind of love. Let Rihanna and Future put your feelings into song in "Loveeeeeee Song."
I like to think of this song as a reminder that it's OK to be sad that you lost love. Like Rihanna literally says in the song, "We all want love." So, uh, yeah. It's natural to be sad that you lost it.

The intra-band romantic drama that fueled Fleetwood Mac's historic Rumors record is well documented, but even before its 1977 release, they were penning love songs that stuck to your ribs. One such track was "Landslide," a gorgeous, lilting showcase for singer Stevie Nicks about how love, in all its forms, never stays static.
Sam Smith has written plenty of songs about the bluer side of romance, but their hit single "Stay With Me" goes to a different place. The track is somewhere between booze-fueled longing and sober honesty. Smith knows that the connection they share with the song's subject is nothing like true love, but still a favorable alternative to isolation.
The track is vintage Cash. It's a masterclass in storytelling, as he stumbles upon a dying man by the railroad tracks who, in his final moments, tells Cash to go see his beloved Rose and their son. He even expresses that he wants his wife to find a new person to love.
"You're in a relationship because you need help, but that's not necessarily why you should be in a relationship. And that's skinny. It doesn't have weight," Bon Iver's Justin Vernon told Pitchfork about the song. "Skinny love doesn't have a chance because it's not nourished.
Passenger perfectly captures the unique emptiness that a breakup feels like: "Only know you've been high when you're feeling low, only hate the road when you're missing home, only know your love her when you let her go."
When everything is falling apart and you don't want to acknowledge it, that's the time to press play on this hit: "I know this will kill me when it's over. I don't want to think about it. I just want you to love me now."
You know the feeling that your former flame has left a permanent imprint? Jordin gets it: "I loved you once, needed protection. You're still a part of everything I do. You're on my heart just like a tattoo. Just like a tattoo I'll always have you." 59ce067264
